How we booked/found it:

Booked direct

Getting There

Parking:

Parking is off-site down Station Road, and to the right. No charge.

Ease of finding:

The restaurant is easy to locate, positioned prominently at the junction of the High Street and Station Road. That said, parking at the junction itself seems to be a safety concern, with vehicles often stopping on the opposite side of the road. We strongly recommend using the free public car park around 100 yards away rather than parking on the street.

Accessibility (steps, ramps, loos, prams, dogs):

There are no steps at the entrance, making access straightforward.

First Impressions

Décor & vibe:

The décor is mixed with a modern feel, thoughtfully incorporating antique tools from the building’s previous use, which is a lovely nod to its heritage. Corrugated iron features on some walls, while others showcase striking wallpaper with mirrors, complemented by framed artwork elsewhere. The result is eclectic but cohesive.

Atmosphere & crowd:

The atmosphere started quietly but filled up quickly. The crowd was predominantly local, which gave the evening a friendly, communal feel. Guests frequently moved between tables or stopped by the bar to chat when they spotted friends, creating a lively backdrop of conversation and laughter.

Welcome on arrival:

The welcome was warm and friendly

What We Ordered

Food & drink ordered:

  • Peach Breeze cocktails (£9.50 each)
  • 2 bottles of Thatchers Rascal cider
  • Sparkling water from Tarka Mineral Water (Devon)

Starters were chicken goujons and crayfish cocktail, followed by sirloin steak with sauce and salmon in filo pastry for mains. Dessert consisted of three chou buns and caramelised banana, which was perfectly nice, but not quite as excellent as the main course quality. The server did not offer or provide information on the ‘Soup of the Day’, which should be an automatic pre-order script.

Presentation:

Dishes were nicely presented and served on hot plates (a personal win for us). The crockery wasn’t uniform, but this didn’t detract from the experience.

Flavour & quality notes:

Faultless. Everything was well seasoned and full of flavour.

  • The crayfish cocktail had a sweet chilli dressing that was used sparingly, which is just right.
  • The sirloin steak was excellent, paired with a rich peppercorn sauce (£2 supplement).
  • Chips were spot-on: fluffy inside, crisp outside.
  • The salmon was equally flavoursome.

Bonus points (even if accidental): hot food served on properly warmed plates, which is one of our biggest bugbears happily avoided.

Cost (incl. any service charge):

£140 for two people, covering three courses each and two drinks per person, including a 15% optional service charge. A fair price for the quality delivered

Staff & Service

Friendliness:

Service was friendly, polished, and efficient at that point of the evening. Courses arrived with a decent timed gap in between so we did not feel rushed, nor were we impatient.

Speed & attentiveness:

Our server was warm, friendly and attentive throughout, though as the evening progressed, they looked a little stretched in terms of all the other guests that arrived. One other personal & little bug bear of ours, is the server felt the need to chew gum in between speaking with us.

Knowledge & recommendations:

Book earlier in the evening. The longer the night progressed all the staff appeared to be struggling to cope on some occasions.

Anyone to mention by name/role:

No

Facilities & Practicalities

Toilets (cleanliness, accessibility):

We did not use on this occasion, but we noticed they were easily accessible close to the bar, BUT there is only 1 female and 1 male loo. We could anticipate during busy times, one may have to wait or queue to use them.

Seating comfort:

Perfectly fine and the table for 2 was a decent size as well. Plenty of room for dishes to be placed and we didn’t feel hemmed in like some venues.

Noise levels:

Busy, but not overly so

Outdoor space / extras:

Not checked

Value for Money

Rating (1–5 stars):

★★★★☆ (4/5)

Why this rating?

£70 per head for 3 courses and drinks is a good price & that includes a service charge!

Insider Tips

Best tables/areas:

We were seated centrally, which worked well and gave a good view of the room. Window tables are more exposed to passing traffic and pedestrians, which may feel uncomfortable for some diners.

Must-order items:

The steak and chips were fabulous

What to avoid:

N/A

Best times to visit:

Early evening, before the dining room fills

The Verdict

What we loved:

The food. Served on nice warm plates so the food doesn’t cool too quickly, and the steak had a steak knife. You would be surprised how many venues do not provide one and expect you to use a normal knife.

What we didn’t:

  1. Later in the evening, service became noticeably more chaotic. Some guests had to approach the bar themselves to request service, and tables that arrived later were occasionally served ahead of earlier ones. This needs tightening, as it risks frustrating diners if the restaurant feels unable to cope at peak times.
  2. Additionally, although it didn’t affect us directly, our server did not ask about allergies — something that should now be a standard and essential part of service.
  3. The drinks menu. We had to ask for one as there wasn’t one on the table (but there was a wine and cocktail menu), and disappointingly, it was a tatty, paper version. An all-encompassing drinks menu with wine, beers, soft drinks in a proper menu binder would match the class of the venue. A small thing, maybe, but it seemed an afterthought and diners shouldn’t have to ask for a drinks menu.

Would we return (yes/no & why):

Yes. The food was great but we understand from speaking to locals, it is a new venue, so we would want to experience a later sitting to see if the standard of earlier service can be maintained throughout the evening. We will definitely be back.
